The new neighborhood will be characterized by plenty of green spaces and play areas.

Out of the 232 new rental apartments, 68 are subsidized units to accommodate low-income tenants who hold a social housing permit (Wohnberechtigungsschein): the "Unter den Linden" development by the municipal subsidiary "Monheimer Wohnen" is on the home straight. Today, February 27, the groundbreaking ceremony took place. As soon as the contract for the development in "Berliner Viertel" was signed in summer 2019 with "nesseler gmbh" construction from Aachen, the plans were drawn up, planning permission obtained, and work commenced in a record time of only six months. It is hoped that this dynamism can be maintained. Eleven residential buildings will be built, and all of them connected with the green corridor. Completion one by one is planned for the end of 2021. "The housing market is very tight, and we, as a local authority, are taking appropriate action," says Mayor Daniel Zimmerman. "The housing shortage is on everybody's lips these days, and action is urgently needed. We set the signals years ago," he adds.

The new homes are being built on the approximately 22,000 square meter site freed up by the demolition of the Anton Schwarz secondary school between Erich Klausener Strasse and Grunewaldstrasse. The units range from a studio flat with a small second room to four-bedroom apartments. The development also includes underground garage parking. Outdoors, the landscaping will be very green. "It is a very attractive mix with something for everyone from single-person to family households," as City Treasurer Sabine Noll and Michael Lobe, head of the City's Property Management department, explain in their function as managing directors of "Monheimer Wohnen." The allocation of tenancies starts from the beginning of 2021. The apartments are all barrier-free. Eager prospective tenants will have to be patient until then.

By the way, one of the upcoming large developments by "Monheimer Wohnen" is already in planning. About another 180 units are to be built in "Sophie Scholl Quarter," which will be centrally situated in the suburb of Baumberg, starting in mid-2021. The aim is still the same – to develop a living residential community with the help of high-standard architecture and affordable good-quality housing for all generations and social strata.
