Unter den Linden

After the scheduled closure of Anton Schwarz School in Erich Klausener Strasse, the City now intends to put the 2.2-hectare site to use for housing, aiming to develop it as a lively residential neighborhood.

The plan for "Berliner Viertel" (Berlin Quarter) is to strengthen the community from the inside out by means of high-standard architecture and quality homes for a wide-ranging target group. The 233 new apartments will be built in three-to-five story blocks plus space in the roof or an attic level. Open-plan layouts and homes with strong community affinities will link the apartment blocks with the terraced housing in the south of the neighborhood.

The new homes in the Berliner Viertel will add to the diversity of available housing, offering differentiated forms of housing for all population groups.

Ground floor tenants will have garden access, while the apartments in the upper stories will have attractive roof patios and balconies. In addition, the entire area will be designed to favor pedestrians and cyclists.

It is no coincidence that the project has been given the title "Unter den Linden" – wich translates to "under linden trees" in English. Firstly, it is a reference to the famous street in Berlin of the same name, and secondly, it is also the guideline for a design concept intended to connect the green spaces in the neighborhood with the North-South axis via Hermann Gmeiner primary school to the Bürgerwiese park. The first apartments are expected to be ready for occupancy in autumn 2021.
